Some landing pages may contain a hashtag (#), (also known as anchor tags) at the end of the URL to navigate/auto scroll the user to particular part of the page.
Example:
https://website.com/page#middlepage
Could auto scroll to the middle of the paragraph on this landing page: https://website.com/page
This can be really useful on long pages where you want to direct your users attention to particular part of the page.
Anchor tags with query string parameters (utms)
What many marketeers don't know is this can be incompatible with applying query string parameters (utms). Adding # in the middle of your campaign links can cause query string parameters to be ignored by your analytics platform. This results in marketing activity being incorrectly attributed to source / mediums and campaigns.
To make sure your query string parameters (utms) still work, just make sure the anchor is moved to the end, it will still auto scroll your user to the right section and your campaign tracking will work.
Example:
Incorrect: https://website.com/page#middlepage?utm_medium=email&utm_source=outlook
Correct: https://website.com/page?utm_medium=email&utm_source=outlook#middlepage
When creating campaign links in Track>Create links page, we will warn you of any landing pages with anchor tags and explain they have been moved to the end. If you have any concerns speak to support@uplifter.ai
